Book hunter Anthony St. Clair brings home an old book for appraisal, a collection of fantastic and frightening stories. When his girlfriend Cynthia Rhomar leaves him alone to go out with her friend Brigitte Stykes, Anthony reads from the book and dreams of being seduced then bitten by a succubus who manifests itself first as a woman, then as a white worm. He awakes with a bite wound matching the one inflicted in the dream. When Cynthia arrives at his empty townhouse the next morning, she finds the book and reads from it, invoking a dream of a bestial incubus. When Anthony and Cynthia meet later neither of them speak directly of their dreams. That night, they go to dinner with Brigitte and the three return to Anthony’s townhouse, where Brigitte reads aloud form the book, a tale of a femme fatale made of wax.The next morning, following an orgy that Anthony and Cynthia only half remember, Brigitte has vanished. They confide in each other and understand that something marvelous and terrible has transpired – the book called Tales, has fallen into their hands, and they have fallen under its spell. In spite of anxieties, Cynthia cannot stop herself from reading the story of Eliana, a woman in a city of crystal towers who surrenders herself into the hands of a wizard named Nikris and suffers eldritch sexual torments by inhuman things before she gains power over her former master. Cynthia and Anthony fight (and fuck) over how to find their missing friend, and Cynthia prevails in her desire to take the book to Professor Stephen Wentworth, her mentor and the nearest thing she knows to an expert on matters occult. As she can, she continues to read Eliana’s story and reality and the book’s tale interweave. As a last grasp for reality, she calls Brigitte’s brother Maxwell “Rascal” Stykes, and manages to alarm him about his sister’s disappearance.
While Cynthia pursues her line of investigation, Anthony tries to learn more about the shuttered bookstore where he found Tales, first by contacting his colleague and sometimes employer Charlie Bankston, who promises to come and see the book soon, and then by traveling back to the old store – Carcossia’s -- to see what else he can find. Inside the store, Anthony is confronted and sexually dominated by a Goth chick who calls herself Cassia, and he remembers events that may have happened to him in a previously forgotten past related to what he is experiencing at Cassia’s hands.
Meanwhile. Cynthia arrives at the college, with her reality largely replaced by the book’s power, leaving her in an erotically charged fantasy state. Visions of demonic assault leave her lying half-naked in a stairwell where Dr. Wentworth finds her. Taking her to his office, he fucks her – he says to help break the spell she is under -- and then calls in a colleague, Derrick, to continue the fucking while he leaves to retrieve a mysterious artifact.
Back in the bookstore, Anthony is confronted by an enormous white worm, like the one from his dream and his bite wound reacts to the creature’s presence by opening and bleeding. Running into the street naked, he encounters police officers who go into Carcossia’s to investigate his story. Soon the cops are screaming and unspeakable things creep out of the store and into the streets, while Anthony flees.
Stephen returns to Cynthia carrying a stone ankh but, while the professor was away, Derrick has been attacked and nearly killed by something unseen as he was fucking Cynthia. Stephen uses the ankh to repel the emergent demon and to bring Cynthia out of her erotic frenzy. He hides her in a nearby office, sends Derrick off with paramedics, and manages to satisfy the campus cops, although they have more questions to ask him later and promise to make a report to the city police, who are apparently busy with a growing crisis downtown near the bookstore.
Running from the scene, Anthony stumbles across a hidden rave club, the Xabaret Xulu, where he meets Cassia again. She tells him of a near divine being she calls the Procurer and initiates Anthony into orgiastic sex, even as the club’s music opens a new dream of a Victorian decadents’ celebration of something awful, a vision that Cynthia sees simultaneously. Cassia takes him out of the club and into her penthouse, a tower that apparently lies outside the planes of reality, where she bestows a magical weapon on him – a dildo-hilted dagger – and sends him off to retrieve the book from Cynthia and Dr. Wentworth.
Meanwhile, Stephen takes Cynthia to his apartment where, in between fucking, he tells her the story of finding the stone ankh at the site of a lost pagan colony, Elyssium. She experiences a vivid flashback to colonial times, told as a story in which Stephen appears in a role that suggests he may be more closely tied to the book than he has admitted.
Anthony, armed with the darkest magic, arrives at the apartment, as Stephen is finishing his tale…
