Carny - October 5
Step right up! For just a dime see wonders beyond imagining!
And maybe we'll let you leave with your soul...
October 5“Okay, the rube just gave you his watch. He’s an old guy. I’m on the stage with the blindfold. What do you say?”
Copley and Andrea sat on the end of the bally near the entrance to Professor Dread’s magic show, beneath a banner with a spook who looked a little like the Phantom of the Opera cutting a woman in half. Copley wore the black pants of his stage clothes but the day was too hot for a shirt.
Andrea didn’t hesitate. “Tell me, Dr. Dread. What possession of this distinguished man am I holding?”
“Yeah,” he said, wanting to hug her. She had given him the exact cues he needed to tell her that she was holding a watch and that it belonged to an older guy. “That’s perfect.” She was a natural for mindreading codes. He felt it already. They were going to be terrific together. “Will you marry me?” he asked.
“Ha ha.” She wore a tight blouse and the line of pale skin just under the hem of her little shorts made his cock ache. She smelled like something sweet and he knew her kiss would taste wonderful.
“What? You got a boyfriend back in Wildwood?”
“Nothing like that.”
“Then marry me.”
“Maybe I’ll do that.”
The gate would open in two hours and in the golden afternoon, only a few lot lice were hanging around. The carnival had pitched in a field at the edge of a thick tangle of woods. Wonderland was playing the Hollow County Fair Thursday night to Sunday, so the crowds would be good, especially on Saturday.
“You got any problem with dancing in there?” Copley asked her.
“Haven’t done it yet, but I don’t think so.”
“Well, I’m looking forward to seeing you dance tonight.”
She leaned to him. “Tell me something,” she said.
“Sure,” he said, but he realized her eyes, her quickened breath, and her red lips, were communicating in clear, unmistakable code.
Her kiss tasted just like he’d known it would, like something too sweet and sinful to be real.
